The current scenario of education has come out from the country’s rural areas. The quality of education has been affected adversely due to COVID-19, and this is the reason why around 31% of the students from both private and government schools are dependent on private tuitions. 71.5% children in Bihar and 74% in West Bengal are dependent on the same, which is the highest in the country. On the other hand, the least, which is only 4.6% of the students who are dependent on private tuitions are from Rajasthan.

These numbers have come to the fore with the release of the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2022, which are the result of a survey conducted on 7 lakh children from 19, 060 villages across 616 districts of India. The good news is that 98.4% of the children from villages now go to school, and for the first time, this number has moved beyond 98%. In 2018, the same was 97.2%. In 2022, out of the students studying in the 5th standard, in both private and government schools, only 42.8% were able to read books from the 2nd standard, while this number in 2018 was 50.5%.

30.5% of the students studying in classes 1st to 8th take private tuitions in the country, and this number in 2018 was 26.4%. And even though the least number of children take private tuitions in Rajasthan, students till the 8th standard are unable to understand mathematics and numbers correctly, and are incapable of subtractions and divisions. Students from the 5th standard have been found to be weak in solving division-related questions, and they cannot read even books from the 2nd standard properly.
