Cuban Foreign Trade Minister calls on VP Dhankhar

New Delhi: Cuban Minister for Foreign Trade and Investment Rodrigo Malmierca Díaz, who is on a visit to India, called on Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar here today. The visit of the Cuban Minister to India comes as India is heading the G20 presidency this year, while Cuba is holding the G77 presidency.

On Monday, the Cuban Minister held talks with MoS for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi on bilateral trade and economy among other things.

The Vice President’s Office in a tweet, said: “Mr Rodrigo Malmierca Díaz, Minister of Foreign Trade & Investment of Cuba, called on the Hon’ble Vice President, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar at Upa-Rashtrapati Nivas in New Delhi today.”

On Monday, MoS Lekhi in a tweet said: “Interacted with H.E. Mr. Rodrigo Malmierca Diaz, Foreign Trade & Investment Minister of Cuba along with Vice Minister H.E. Ms. Deborah Rivas. Discussed all bilateral issues including trade, economy, development partnership, culture and education.”

Cuban Minister Malmierca Diaz also spoke at the Association Summit 2023. In a tweet, he posted: “We spoke in the first session of the Association Summit 2023, in #NewDelhi #India , highlighting 63 years of bilateral friendship and cooperation relations and our commitment to multilateralism, which we will always defend, especially today as Group 77+China presidency.”

He also held a meeting with the Commerce Minister and said the two sides agreed that there is potential to increase bilateral trade. They also expressed their willingness to favor Indian capital investment in Cuba and joint projects in renewable energy and the pharmaceutical industry.

The G77 is a coalition of developing countries from the South established in 1964 at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). From an initial membership of 77 countries which had a common objective of promoting their collective economic interest, it has grown to 134 counties. The G-77 has emerged as the most important forum of the developing countries for harmonizing their views on global economic issues.
