India is among the youngest nations across the world, the average age being merely 29 years, but what is worrisome is that 32.9 percent of India’s youth, aged between 15 and 29, are neither studying, doing a job, nor are they undergoing training of any sort. This fact has emerged out of a report published this month by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) of the Ministry of Statistics. A survey was conducted by the NSSO from January 2020 to August 2021 on a total of 2.9 lakh families across all the Indian states.

Out of the youths sitting idle, 20.3 percent are looking for a job, while 69.8 percent are busy with household chores. 1.5 percent of the youths are unable to work due to health issues, and 2.3 percent are simply wasting their time. If computer-based knowledge is looked into, 61.6 percent of youth aged between 15 and 29 do not even know how to copy-paste. And if an email is to be sent with an attachment, 73.3 percent of them find it impossible.

The worst scenario can be seen in Assam wherein only 29.2 percent of the youth aged between 15 and 29 can copy-paste, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 29.5 percent. Assam is again the worst with only 17 percent of them knowing how to send an email with an attachment, and again, MP is next in the list with 18.8 percent.
