Gaza: Palestinian militants on Wednesday night fired two projectiles from the Gaza Strip towards southern Israel following tension at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem.

An Israeli army spokesman said in a press statement that the two projectiles were launched from the Gaza Strip towards the Gaza border.

According to the spokesman, one of the projectiles failed to cross the border and landed in Gaza, while the other landed in the border fence area inside Israeli territory.

No injuries or damage were reported, and no one has so far claimed responsibility.

The Israeli Army Radio reported that sirens were turned on in the Israeli towns bordering the Gaza Strip due to the firing.

The two missiles were fired at southern Israel when Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi was in the area to celebrate the Jewish Passover holiday with the soldiers, according to the radio.

Officials of the Islamic Resistance Movement of Hamas and eyewitnesses said that an explosion was heard at the Gaza Strip’s border.

The incident took place after Palestinian militants fired nine projectiles, four of which were intercepted by the Israeli army Iron Dome, at predawn from the Gaza Strip to southern Israel, according to the Israeli army spokesman.

The latest firing of the two projectiles came after the tension in Al-Aqsa Mosque compound early on Wednesday, when Israeli police raided the mosque in East Jerusalem and clashed with dozens of Palestinian worshippers inside.

The month of Ramadan this year coincides with the Passover holiday for the Jews, which raises fears of a recurrence of violent clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians as seen in the past years.
