Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai’s political secretary MP Renukacharya is in a soup after he has been booked for violating election norms.

Renukacharya has been booked for not keeping accounts of expenses incurred in connection with an election and committing the offence of bribery, under IPC sections 171-E and 171-I, respectively.

IPC section 171-E states that whoever commits the offence of bribery shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both, provided that bribery by treating shall be punished with fine only.

IPC Section 171-I states that whoever is required by any law for the time being in force or any rule having the force of law to keep accounts of expenses incurred at or in connection with an election fails to keep such accounts shall be punished with a fine which may extend to Rs 500.

According to the FIR filed against Renukacharya, it was found that about 250 voters were organised, and they were holding election campaigns to woo Honnali voters and arranged for meals in the dining hall of Gururaj Kalyan Mantapa for the participants.

The complainant alongwith his team brought to the notice of the Returning Officer Basavaraju of Shivajinagar, alleging that Renukacharya did not get permission from election officers to organise such an event, the FIR said.

It also added that Bommai’s political secretary continued to address the event even after the police told him to stop the speech several times as model code of conduct is in force.
