Bengaluru: Taking a swipe at the Congress in poll-bound Karnataka, mercurial Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Dr BR Ambedkar was against reservation based on religion, and yet Congress party is determined to give reservation to Muslims.

“Babasaheb Ambedkar had said that reservation cannot be given on the basis of religion. This is the basis of our Constitution … Today Congress is saying that we will give reservations to the Muslims,” Sarma said.

In the manifesto of the Congress, Sarma said the poll document of the grand old party looks like the manifesto of People’s Front of India and some fundamentalist Muslim organisations.

“PFI is already banned. The Siddaramaiah government withdrew cases against PFI during their tenure. So they (Congress) are saying to ban PFI and Bajrang Dal to appease Muslims,” he said.

On implementation of Uniform Civil Code, Sarma said it will guarantee gender justice and equal rights for Muslim women in the southern state.

“Karnataka BJP made a very bold commitment and it will usher a nationwide demand for the implementation of UCC across the country,” Sarma said, adding that nationwide National Register of Citizens is the need of the hour.

The Congress party on Tuesday in its manifesto for May 10 assembly election in Karnataka said it will take decisive action as per law including organisations like Bajrang Dal, PFI and others.
