22 die, dozens hurt as bus falls off bridge in MP

Khargone (MP): At least 22 people – including three children – died and approximately 30 sustained injuries on Tuesday when a bus heading for Indore veered out of control, smashed through a railing and plunged off a bridge over the now-dry Borad river near Dongargaon in this district’s Un Police Station limits about 35 km from here.

Furnishing details, Sub-Divisional Officer (Police) Rakesh Mohan Shukla said, “Those hurt have been admitted at the district infirmary but the driver is hitherto untraceable and it is suspected that he dozed off at the wheel. Villagers righted the overturned bus and brought out several victims prior to arrival of law-enforcement authorities. Citizens rushed the injured to hospital using their own vehicles.”

Some cases were later shifted to other infirmaries.

Collector Shivraj Singh Verma, Superintendent of Police DS Yadav and other officers reached the scene.

Meanwhile in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh each; Rs 50,000 to every grievously-injured individual and Rs 25,000 to the other victims.
