Government forms 3-member probe commission to look into Manipur violence

The Union Government, on Sunday, June 4, constituted a 3-member probe commission, to look into the Manipur clashes which took place between the Meiteis and the Kukis in the northeastern state. The Ministry of Home Affairs, releasing a notification, said, “Whereas on 3rd May, 2023, large scale violence broke out in the state of Manipur, and as a result of the violence, many residents of Manipur lost their lives, and several others got seriously injured, their houses and properties were burnt down as a result of arson, and many of them were rendered homeless”.

“On the recommendation of the government of Manipur, the Central Government is of the opinion that it is necessary to appoint a Commission of Inquiry for the purpose of making an inquiry into a definite matter of public importance, namely, incidents of violence in Manipur”, the notification reads.

The three-member inquiry commission comprises the former Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court, Justice Ajai Lamba, who will be the chairperson of the same; retired IAS officer, Himanshu Shekhar Das, and retired IPS officer, Aloka Prabhakar.

It has been asked for the commission to submit its findings to the Central Government as soon as possible, and no later than six months from their first sitting.
