On Monday, June 5, Bihar cabinet minister, Tej Pratap Yadav, speaking with the media, asserted that it was the BJP which demolished the under-construction bridge which was being constructed at a cost of 1750 crore Rupees, and was aimed at connecting Bhagalpur and Khagaria. This was just a day after the bridge collapsed into the holy river of Ganga.

“The bridge has been demolished by the BJP. We are building the bridge and they are demolishing it”, claimed Yadav.

Reacting to this statement made by Bihar’s Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “What can I say about this? May God give him good sense. Nitish Babu, two Parliament buildings could have been constructed in 1700 crores which were wasted by your government. They should learn to respect the taxpayers’ money”.

On the other hand, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister, Tejashwi Yadav, on Sunday, said that a portion of the same bridge had collapsed back in April 2022, when the BJP was in power in the state in an alliance with Bihar CM Nitish Kumar’s JDU. Yadav had said that many ‘structural defects’ had been pointed out by experts and they had pulled down many portions which had been labelled as ‘vulnerable’. He had also added that the collapse on Sunday confirmed their ‘worst apprehensions’.

Yadav also made a comment saying, “A brand new bridge was in the making. Who knows what happened to the bridge? Who knows who has cast an evil eye on Bihar?”

On this, former state road construction department minister and senior BJP leader, Nitin Nabin said, “When experts who inspected the bridge had already informed the government that there were serious structural defects, then why did the government allow the construction to be continued?”
