Bengaluru: BJP MLAs in Karnataka on Tuesday disrupted the proceedings of the monsoon session over the “failure’ of implementation of five poll guarantees (5Gs) promised by the ruling party ahead of the May 10 assembly election in the state.

As soon as the proceedings started, the BJP members, including former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and former minister R Ashoka, requested Karnataka Speaker UT Khader to allow discussion on 5Gs under the adjournment motion prior to question hour.

In reply, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah asked the BJP members to give up their stubbornness and stated that discussions on the adjournment motion would only happen after questions and zero hours.

“The BJP members should give up their stubbornness. The government is ready to answer all their questions. But, discussions on the adjournment motion will happen only after questions and zero hours,” he said.

BJP members, vehemently objecting to the word ‘stubbornness”, called it unparliamentary, and thereafter stormed into the well of the house, raising slogans against the Congress party and its government.

The BJP has been targeting the Congress government for its “failure” to implement five poll guarantees.

The government has launched the Shakti scheme, offering free travel in non-luxury buses for women, while the Gruha Laxmi scheme, giving Rs 2,000 a month to women heads of the APL-BPL ration card-holding families, will be implemented in August.

The benefit of the Gruha Jyoti scheme of 200 units of free electricity will be reflected in the August bill, while Rs 3,000 a month in aid to unemployed graduates and Rs 1,500 to diploma holders, who passed in 2022-23 under the Yuva Nidhi scheme, will be launched soon.

After taking cognisance of the ruckus, Speaker Khader adjourned the proceedings for 15 minutes.
