After the report of hundreds of Meitei people from southern Assam and Manipur leaving the state of Mizoram, following a public call by insurgents in the state, asking the Meitei people to leave, the government of Mizoram has reassured the safety of the Meitei residents of the state.

The call of the insurgents against the Meitei people in Mizoram has come after the video of two Kuki women being paraded naked in Manipur went viral. Amidst the exodus, the Mizoram government, in an official statement, has said that the State Home Commissioner and Secretary, H Lalengmawia, met with leaders of the Meitei community, assuring them of their safety and security. According to official sources, approximately 1500 Meitei families are known to be residing and working in Mizoram.

Now, there have been widespread reports of the Meitei people leaving the capital city of Aizawl, by various modes of transportation. It is the Peace Accord MNF Returnees’ Association (PAMRA), which issued a statement on Friday, saying that the Meitei people in Mizoram should leave the state for ‘their own safety’, adding that any violence against the Meitei people would solely be their responsibility.
