On Friday, September 29, the Women’s Reservation Bill got the assent of the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, and has now become a law. The bill was earlier passed by both the houses of the Parliament, a week ago, on September 21, 2023. The new law will provide 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and the state assemblies.

Before the bill was presented to President Murmu for her assent, it was signed by Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman, Jagdeep Dhankar.

While the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha with near unanimity and the Rajya Sabha with unanimity, during a special Parliament session, held earlier in September. However, the new law may be implemented by the year 2029, after the completion of the Census and the delimitation exercise.  On the other hand, the Opposition has been demanding immediate implementation.
