On Monday, November 27, Kashmir’s Bandipora police informed that they had arrested 5 individuals, including one Rohingya national, Manzoor Alam, in relation with a human trafficking network. As per news agency Kashmir News Observer (KNO), a senior police official stated how the arrested accused were involved in trafficking Rohingya women through Bangladesh, and arranging marriage alliances with locals in Kashmir, in return of money.

As per the police, the arrests were made following top-notch investigative efforts which blew the lid off the illegal operation. The modus operandi of the traffickers involved exploiting vulnerable Rohingya women, transporting them through Bangladesh, and arranging their marriages with locals. The transactional nature of these marriages also shows how there is a relation between human trafficking and illegal monetary gains.

The police have now taken cognizance of the matter and have begun probe into the same.
