Paris: 70,000 farmers in France took part in large-scale protests throughout the country due to dissatisfaction with government policy. Over 41,000 tractors were involved, according to the French National Federation of Agricultural Holders’ Unions (FNSEA).

Earlier, FNSEA President Arnaud Rousseau said that the farmers’ protests would spread to 85 of the 96 departments of metropolitan France by Friday.

BFMTV reported Friday that farmers on tractors blocked traffic on a number of key highways leading to Paris.

Since last Thursday, farmers in France have been blocking highways and dumping manure and waste in front of government buildings across the country. The farmers are demanding recognition of the importance of their profession and denouncing the government’s agricultural policies, which they say make them uncompetitive.
