Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party workers on Wednesday staged a protest against the Election Commission of India for deferring polling in Anantnag-Rajouri seat to May 25.

The PDP workers attempted to take a march towards the city centre Lal Chowk from the party office, but were stopped by the police.

The protesters raised slogans against the Election Commission for deferring the elections.

The ECI on Tuesday postponed polling in the Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary seat to May 25 from May 7 citing logistical issues owing to adverse weather conditions.

Earlier, party leader Naeem Akhtar demanded that the report submitted by the local authorities to the ECI, which led to the deferring of polls, should be made public.

The ECI on Tuesday said the election was deferred in Anantnag- Rajouri Lok Sabha constituency, after considering a report from UT administration as well as analyzing the ground situation prevailing in the said constituency.

“ We want that report to be made public so that we know whether the officers of J&K are working for the people or fulfilling orders of their masters,” Akthar said during a press conference in Srinagar.

The PDP leader alleged that ECI has become a tool of the BJP.
