New Delhi: With Opposition MPs insisting on taking up discussions over bribery charges against the Adani group, killings in Manipur and violent clashes in Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh, the Rajya Sabha was on Monday adjourned to meet at 11 a.m. on November 27.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar repeatedly requested members to allow the House to run smoothly but the request fell on deaf ears forcing the first adjournment of the House at around 11-30 a.m. The House reconvened after 15 minutes, only to be adjourned again to meet at 11 AM on Wednesday, November 27.

“I will urge all of you to allow me to continue with the normal business of the House,” appealed the Vice President and Ex-Officio Chairman Dhankhar when the House met after the first adjournment.

The Opposition members, however, refused to budge from their position and wanted suspension of the scheduled business of the House.

“So normal business not allowed. The House stands adjourned to meet at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 27,” Dhankhar said.

The Winter session of Parliament, which commenced during the day, saw repeated disruptions over the Adani issue following the indictment of the company promoter Gautam Adani and other senior executives by the US Justice department in an alleged bribery and fraud case.

“As the Parliament session begins, the first step the government should take is to have a detailed discussion on the Adani saga which has the potential of tarnishing India’s image at the global stage,” Congress President and Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said earlier in the day.

As many as 13 Opposition members had given notice under Rule 267 of the House seeking discussion on alleged corruption, bribery and financial irregularities of the Adani group.

Some members wanted the Upper House to take up discussion on ongoing violence and killings in Manipur. Discussion was also sought on violent clashes during the survey of a Mosque in UP’s Sambhal.

The House Chairman, however, rejected their demand and disallowed discussion on the same citing earlier directives of the Chair.
