New Delhi: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took oath as a Lok Sabha member on Thursday following her thumping victory from Kerala’s Wayanad in a by-poll.

Priyanka won the bypolls in Wayanad earlier this month by defeating her nearest CPI rival Sathyan Mokeri by over 4.10 lakh votes.

While taking the oath, the 52-year-old Priyanka held a copy of the Constitution.

The Wayanad Lok Sabha seat was vacated by Priyanka Gandhi’s brother, Rahul Gandhi, who had won from there in the Lok Sabha elections this year. However, he opted to remain an MP from the Gandhi family bastion of Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli, which had also elected him.

Priyanka was joined at her oath-taking ceremony by her mother former Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul, now the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Ravindra Chavan (Congress), who won the Lok Sabha by-election from Nanded in Maharashtra, took oath in Marathi in the name of God. The bypoll was necessitated following the demise of his father, Vasantrao Chavan, recently.

Later, the Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned till noon amid protests by opposition members over the alleged Adani bribery case and violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal
