New Delhi: The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed by voice vote a proposal to extend the time limit for the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 to submit its report.

The committee will now be able to submit its report during the Budget Session next year.

Panel Chairman Jagadambika Pal proposed in the House that the time period for the committee to submit its report be extended till the last day of the Budget Session, 2025, which was passed by the members by a voice vote.

It may be mentioned that the Opposition members had met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and demanded more time to discuss the bill.

The committee, headed by BJP Lok Sabha member Jagdambika Pal, was formed during the last session of Parliament. Earlier, the government had introduced a bill to amend the Waqf Act, to which many Opposition parties, including the Congress, had expressed strong objection. After this, the House proposed to send the bill to the Joint Parliamentary Committee for review
