Windhoek: Namibian Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has won the country’s presidential election, becoming the first woman in Namibia’s history to hold the office, the Electoral Commission of Namibia has said.

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of Namibia’s ruling South-West Africa’s Peoples Organization party (SWAPO) won the November 27 election, gaining 57.3% of votes, which amounts to the support of over 683,000 voters.

“In accordance with Section 109 of the Electoral Act, No. 5 of 2014, as amended, Dr. Elsie T. Nghikembua, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, has declared Her Excellency Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwa of the SWAPO Party as the winner and President-elect of the 2024 Presidential elections,” the commission said on social media.

The country’s opposition reportedly opposed the results.

The president-elect also became the second woman president on the whole African continent.

Speaking to Sputnik in October, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah said that if elected, she planned to focus on the country’s economic development, including working to reduce the unemployment rate and boost oil and gas industries.
