Manipur: Illegal poppy plantation destroyed, arms recovered

Imphal: Manipur Police and other central security forces launched a series of operations to destroy illegal poppy plantations and seize arms and ammunition.

Police said a joint team of Manipur Police, CRPF, the Forest Department, and an executive magistrate undertook three days of poppy destruction from Dec 17 to 19 at Kangpokpi.

The team destroyed 63 acres of poppy plantation, viz. 20 acres in Langka, 18 acres in Bileijang, and 25 acres in Makui.

An FIR was registered, and efforts are on to identify and book the cultivators, police said. Police also recovered.

303 Sniper modified, 22 rifle, single barrel barrel rifles, 12 bore cartridges, IED, detonator, commercial explosive, tube launching, anti-riot shell 7.62 mm Russian RPD Machine Gun, 5.56 mm INSAS Rifle, 0.32 Pistol, 2″ Mortar, explosive weighing about 2.5 kg, Pompi Gun, Wireless Radio Set, 82 mm Heavy Shell.

Under heavy escort, security personnel also enabled the movement of 167 and 371 vehicles carrying essential items along NH-37 and NH-2, respectively.

Both highways had been blocked by various Kuki organisations since May 3, 2023.
