Dhaka: A total of 167 leaders and activists of Bangladesh’s former ruling party Awami League have surrendered to the Jessore court in connection with four cases involving arms and explosives, media reports said on Monday.

The judge granted bail to 42 individuals, while the remaining were sent to prison.

The surrender took place on Sunday at the Judicial Magistrate courts of Palash Kumar and Golam Kibria, the Dhaka Tribune reported.

Rokhsana Khatun, the court inspector in Jessore, said, “105 individuals surrendered before the court of Judicial Magistrate Palash Kumar in connection with two cases under the Abhaynagar police station. Additionally, 42 individuals involved in a case under Keshabpur police station also surrendered.

“Following the hearings, the judge granted bail to the 42 individuals from the Keshabpur case, while the 105 from the Abhaynagar cases were ordered to be sent to prison,” Dhaka Tribune quoted the court inspector.

“In a separate incident, 20 Awami League leaders and activists implicated in a case under the Kotwali Model police station surrendered before the court of Judicial Magistrate Golam Kibria. After the hearing, the judge rejected their bail applications and directed them to be sent to prison,” she said.
