Rio De Janeiro: Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has said that he would leave BRICS and the World Health Organization (WHO) if he comes back into power in the country.

The statement comes weeks after US President Donald Trump and Argentinian President Javier Milei, allegedly Bolsonaro’s main foreign allies, decided to leave several international organizations and bodies.

“If I become president again, I would leave BRICS and the World Health Organization,” he told the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper.

Bolsonaro also promised to sign a “sound defense agreement” with the US, aimed at fighting terrorism on the border between Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina, and to allow the creation of Washington’s military base in the region.

Despite being barred from running for office, Bolsonaro reportedly plans to run in Brazil’s 2026 presidential election. He expects Trump to pressure Brazilian judges to delay enforcement of his political ban. The ex-leader suggested that Trump could impose economic sanctions on the government of current Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, which could help his political comeback.

In January 2023, Bolsonaro supporters, who had been protesting the results of the presidential election since late 2022, seized government buildings in the capital of Brazil, including the Congress, the presidential palace, and the Supreme Court. The police only managed to clear government buildings of protesters by evening. Around 2,000 people were detained.
