Ottawa: A Delta Air Lines plane overturned while landing at the Toronto Pearson International Airport in Canada on Monday afternoon, injuring 17 passengers.

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) CEO Deborah Flint confirmed in a press briefing that there were four crew members and 76 passengers on board the plane, and that the injured were brought to local hospitals.

The GTAA was unaware if any passenger suffered critical injuries, she added.

The Delta plane arrived from the U.S. city of Minneapolis. Due to the accident, two of the airport’s runways will be closed for the next few days, according to Flint.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said it will be in charge of the related investigation and provide updates.

Aviation expert Phyl Durdey said on CTV News that there are a myriad of factors at play that could have caused the airplane to flip onto its side.

Judging by the windsock visible in videos captured at the scene, Durdey said, “There is a pretty strong crosswind.”

Minister of Transport Anita Anand said she was closely following the serious incident at the Pearson airport.
