Srinagar: Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday alleged that weeks after the tragic death of Makhan Din, a Gujjar youth, no action has been taken, with neither a judicial inquiry nor support or compensation provided to the bereaved family.

26-year-old Makhan Din, died by suicide in Kathua district, earlier this month after alleged police torture. His death along with the killing of a truck driver Wasim Mir who shot dead in Army firing in Baramulla district after he allegedly ignored repeated warnings to stop had sparked outrage with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah urging the Union government to ensure a transparent and time-bound investigation into two incidents.

On Tuesday Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba slammed inaction over Makhan Din’s death.

“Weeks have passed since the tragic death of Makhan Din, yet no action has been taken. No order for a judicial enquiry or even any form of support or compensation for the bereaved family,” she said in a post on X.

“The most concerning part is that SHO Bilawar who allegedly drove the victim to suicide is still at large. The issue simply doesn’t end here – many innocent individuals like Makhan Din remain arrested on false charges of militancy by the same officer and could face the same tragic fate unless action is taken. We urge DGP JK Police to intervene and ensure justice for the family and also prevent such tragic cases in the future,” she added.
