New Delhi: A Delhi court after a late Thursday night hearing sent 26/11 Mumbai attack accused Tahawwur Rana to the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) custody for 18 days, hours after he was brought here following his extradition from the US.

NIA’s Special Judge, Chander Jit Singh, after the hearing, pronounced the remand period of the Pakistan-born Canadian national, who was presented before the Special Court after completion of his medical examination.

The 64-year-old physician was brought to Patiala House Court shortly after landing here in a special plane from Los Angeles. The NIA formally arrested Rana, a key conspirator in the deadly 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, immediately after he arrived at the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

NIA requested for 20-day custody of Rana, who was produced through in-camera proceedings before the court.

The trial court records were previously sent to Mumbai due to the presence of multiple cases related to the 26/11 attacks.

Ahead of Rana’s arrival from the US, the court received the trial records related to the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.

NIA made an application to the court seeking the retrieval of the case files from Mumbai.

The Delhi Police removed the public and mediapersons from the court premises, citing security reasons.

Tahawwur Rana is one of the 26/11 Mumbai attack accused chargesheeted by the NIA in 2011 and by the Mumbai Police in 2023. NIA chargesheeted Rana for the larger conspiracy beyond the 26/11 Mumbai attacks whereas Mumbai Police chargesheeted him for his role in 26/11.

The US Supreme Court rejected Rana’s appeal to stop his extradition and cleared the way for his transfer to Indian custody
