Cairo: About 660,000 refugees are registered in Egypt, most of them Sudanese, a spokesperson for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Christine Beshay, said.

A significant increase in the number of refugees occurred due to the crisis in Sudan, Beshay told reporters in Cairo on Monday, adding that 378,000 refugees of the total number are Sudanese nationals.

On April 15, 2023, clashes broke out between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The parties to the conflict have since introduced a number of temporary nationwide ceasefires, but none has helped settle the conflict. In late October, the parties resumed negotiations, mediated by Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, but the hostilities in the country continue.
