Bengal Guv sanctions prosecution against arrested Partha Chatterjee

Kolkata: West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose has sanctioned prosecution against incarcerated former education minister Partha Chatterjee in the multi-crore rupee teachers’ recruitment scandal in the state government-aided schools across the state, sources said on Wednesday.

Chatterjee, who held various ministries in the Mamata Banerjee government, including education and industries, was held by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) last year, along with his aide, Arpita Mukherjee.

The CBI, probing the scam after the Calcutta High Court directed the central agency to go in depth to find out the truth, arrested the politician in July 2022 after the recovery of cash of nearly Rs 50 crore from Arpita’s two flats in the city.

Sources said the Raj Bhawan on Tuesday sanctioned prosecution against the 70-year-old seasoned politician, who was one of the trusted lieutenants of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee.

Chatterjee and Arpita Mukherjee have been facing the probe in the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) recruitment scandal, in which many state officials and TMC MLAs are now in jails.

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) also filed a prosecution complaint against eight accused, including Chatterjee and Mukherjee, in the scam before the PMLA Special Court in the city.
