Belagavi: BJP MLC Basavaraj Horatti on Wednesday was elected unopposed as the Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman.

The 76 years old BJP leader was the lone candidate who had filed nomination for the Council Chairman poll. After winning the election, acting chairman Raghunath Rao Malkapure handed over the reins to Horatti.

Previously, Horatti was elected chairman of the house as a member of JDS, but he resigned from the party and joined BJP after the expiration of his tenure in the upper house.

Horatti contested and won from West Teachers’ Constituency on a BJP ticket earlier this year. He has won elections from this constituency for a record seven times.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai congratulated Horatti and thanked the Opposition for unanimously electing the latter as the Council Chairman.
