Imphal: Civil society members in Manipur on Monday appealed to Kuki militants to release two hostages abducted on July 27 even as Chief Minister N Biren Singh condemned the abduction and discussed the matter with former Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh.

Sources said militants were demanding release of Kuki militants held by National Investigation Agency for allegedly waging war against the country. The suspected militants also released a video of the two abducted men.

The Chief Minister said that out of the three individuals abducted by Kuki militants, one was released on that day itself and the other two are still held captive. The three were going to going to an Army recruitment rally when abducted.

He said the Director General of Police, Manipur, has been rushed to the spot and hoped that it will have a positive outcome.

Since May 3, 2023, people from a particular community have been unable to leave the state due to a highway blockade by Kuki militants. Those who venture onto the highway or enter a Kuki-dominated area have gone missing. So far 31 persons are reported missing since the outbreak of the violence.
