Gangtok: Urging the people of Sikkim to remain peaceful, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured them that the Constitutional provisions for the Sikkimese would be protected and their sentiments respected.

“Sentiments of the Sikkimese community are well respected. Constitutional provisions for the people of Sikkim, shall be protected,” Shah told a visiting delegation from Sikkim in New Delhi on Sunday.

Underscoring that people of Sikkim are an integral and essential part of India, he urged them to remain peaceful.

Shah made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation from Sikkim that comprised various groups including the Joint Action Committee and Sikkimese Nagrik Samaj.

The delegation, which went to the national capital all the way from Sikkim, aired their grievances with regard to a recent Supreme Court observation about the Sikkimese Nepali community.

Shah assured the delegation, led by newly appointed Sikkim State BJP President Dilli Ram Thapa, that clarity on the term “Sikkimese”, in line with Constitutional provisions, will be immediately sought by the Home and Finance Ministries by placing the matter for review in the apex court.
