Kolkata: The Kolkata Police have arrested Professor Rana Roy on Monday, accused of issuing alleged threat letters to Jadavpur University Registrar Snehamanju Basu and the Joint Registrar threatening them with dire consequences if any harm was made to Sourav Chowdhury.

A former student of Jadavpur University, who has already been arrested, sources said on Monday, Roy, a professor of a Cooch Behar college in North Bengal, was arrested by the city police from a hotel in Bhubaneswar (Odisha) in another case related to molestation.

A molestation FIR was lodged at the Tala Police station in north Kolkata, for which the professor, a resident of Belgachia was arrested.

He was being brought to the city and would be produced in a court of law for judicial process later on Monday, sources added.

The Jadavpur PS has traced the professor who had purportedly “signed” the threat letters to Jadavpur University registrar and joint registrar Sanjay Gopal Sarkar, asking him to appear before them at the earliest. The professor who is presently posted at a Cooch Behar College – has denied any connection with the incident. Both JU authorities and police had clarified earlier that the sender has no link with JU.

The JU Registrar and Jt Registrar received an anonymous letter by post on Friday threatening them of dire consequences if any harm was caused to Sourav Chowdhury, one of the prime accused, who used to live in the JU hostel. Chowdhury is a pass out student of 2022.

He was arrested a day after a first year 18-year-old student after a fatal fall from the hostel 2nd floor died on August 10, allegedly owing to ragging from senior students as well from the former students.

Both Jadavpur University authorities and police had said the sender has no link with JU, which is having trouble after the tragic death of the student, who hailed from Nadia district. His death occurred on the third day of his stay in the campus.
