Jammu: A major tragedy was averted on Thursday when a box containing explosive material was found in a drain near taxi stand outside Jammu Tawi Railway Station.

“During cleaning of the drain, a box was found in it and when it was frisked by our patrol team, 18 detonators, wires and gelatin material was found,” Arif Rishu, Senior Superintendent of Police, GRP Jammu Railways here told reporters.

He said that a bag contained explosive materials packed in two boxes.

“18 detonators and some wires were recovered. Around 500 grams of wax-type material was packed in the box. Materials have been seized,” SSP GRP said.

It was not a ready improvised explosive device, said the SSP adding, “our men were already on alert and security was heightened in view of festive season within and around the railway station.”

“Only because of tight security, the elements who wanted to sabotage at railway station, failed in their design,” Rishu said.

“We have registered a case and investigation is in progress,” he said adding that a major tragedy has been averted with timely recovery.

Meanwhile, the taxi operators at the Railway Station said that railway police is closely monitoring every activity at the premises but drains and other dumping yards go unchecked for months, which can be a safe havens for the anti-national elements to execute their plans.
