Belagavi: In her address at the inauguration of a state-of-the-art cancer hospital in Belagavi, President Droupadi Murmu highlighted the Government of India’s concerted efforts to improve healthcare access and affordability, particularly through the Ayushman Bharat Jan Arogya Yojana.
She emphasised the transformative impact of the scheme in enhancing cancer treatment accessibility for millions of Indians, especially those from low-income groups.
“Under Ayushman Bharat, we have seen a significant reduction in the time between cancer diagnosis and the commencement of treatment, ensuring timely intervention that is critical for better outcomes,” President Murmu stated on late Friday evening.
“The inclusion of senior citizens aged 70 and above in the scheme’s coverage will further strengthen the support for the elderly in accessing affordable healthcare, including cancer care,” she said.
The newly inaugurated cancer hospital, equipped with cutting-edge technology, is poised to provide comprehensive care under one roof. The hospital’s advanced treatment facilities will ensure swift and precise cancer treatment, offering a beacon of hope for patients facing this devastating illness.
President Murmu praised the efforts behind the hospital’s establishment, acknowledging the important role of healthcare professionals in providing not only medical treatment but also the empathy and compassion that patients need during their cancer journey.
“Healthcare professionals must offer more than just treatment; they should offer hope and reassurance, playing a pivotal role in uplifting the spirits of patients and their families,” she said.
The President also reiterated the global challenge of cancer, pointing to the estimated 20 million new cancer cases and 9.7 million cancer-related deaths in 2022. In India, the cancer incidence is expected to rise by 13% by 2025, underscoring the urgency of expanding specialised cancer care facilities and services.
In her speech, President Murmu called for increased awareness around cancer prevention, early detection, and timely treatment, stressing the collective responsibility of society in combating this disease. She also highlighted the importance of addressing gender disparities in healthcare, urging families to prioritise the health of women and ensure timely diagnosis and treatment for them.
The President concluded her address by commending the KLE Society, which has been a pioneer in providing quality education and healthcare for over a century, particularly in semi-urban and rural areas. She encouraged the young medical professionals in attendance to approach their careers with compassion and innovation, as they will play a vital role in shaping the future of healthcare in India.
