Mexico City: The Mexican government will take Google to court if the company ignores its letter disputing the rename of the Gulf of Mexico into the Gulf on America, in line with US President Donald Trump’s executive order, for users outside of the US, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday.

“We will await a response from Google, and if there is none, we will take legal action. They have no right. The US has adopted an order regarding its continental shelf. Google has not right to rename the platform for Mexico and Cuba, and that is why this situation has arisen,” Sheinbaum said during a press conference at the National Palace.

Trump’s executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America is valid within the territorial waters of the US, or 22 nautical miles from the coast, as this name is legally recognized in international organizations and agreements, the Mexican government has said in a letter to Google.

“To other countries, it will appear as the Gulf of Mexico and America. The executive order only changes the name of the continental shelf, not the entire Gulf. Here, Google is changing the name of the Mexican and Cuban platform. We do not agree with this,” Sheinbaum said.

On January 20, in his first day in office, Trump signed an executive order to start the process of renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and Mount Denali in Alaska into Mount McKinley. The US Secretary of the Interior must take “all appropriate actions” for the renaming “within 30 days,” according to the document. Trump had announced this intention before his inauguration, saying that this step would be part of his administration’s new policy.
