Nitish Kumar’s government wins trust vote amidst opposition’s walkout

On Monday, February 12, the floor test of Nitish Kumar’s government, to prove its majority in Bihar, took place. This followed Kumar’s move of getting back with the NDA. The Kumar-led NDA government in the state won the vote of confidence by securing 129 votes. Amidst this, a walkout was held by the members of Opposition.

Ahead of the trust vote, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar alleged that the RJD, a key player in the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ Kumar dumped recently, indulged in corrupt practices during its rule in the state, and that the new NDA government will now initiate a probe into the same. He also claimed that during the RJD’s misrule, several communal riots took place in the state, and the safety of women was at the lowest.

Bihar Governor Rajendra Arlekar said, ‘Rule of law prevails in the state, that is the top priority of the government. To improve law and order, the strength of the police has been increased.’

The trust vote had to take place because Nitish Kumar bid adieu to the Congress-led Mahagathbandhan, and quit as the Bihar CM, after not being named as the convenor of the Opposition’s I.N.D.I.A bloc. And as he took the oath as the CM of Bihar for the ninth time, joining hands with the BJP-led NDA, he required a trust vote in the Bihar legislative assembly.

At this juncture, RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav asked, ‘Could the prime minister guarantee that Nitish Kumar would not switch sides once again?’
