Operation Kaveri: India evacuates 2,400 from Sudan, 1,600 reach India

New Delhi, Apr 29 (UNI) India has successfully evacuated 2,400 of its nationals from Sudan, with over 1,600 of them arriving in India, even as more sorties of rescued Indians left Port Sudan for Jeddah under Operation Kaveri.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in a tweet said:

“#OperationKaveri moves further.

“231 Indian reach home safely as another flight reaches New Delhi.

“Indigo joins #OperationKaveri.”

Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan, who is stationed in Jeddah to monitor the operation, in a tweet said that with the 231 Indians arriving in New Delhi, around 1,600 have reached India so far.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi in a late night tweet said that nearly 2,400 Indians have been evacuated from strife-torn Sudan so far.

Last night, INS Sumedha departed from Port Sudan with 300 passengers onboard for Jeddah.

Yesterday, two batches of Indians arrived in India – one batch of 362 Indians touched down in Bengaluru, while another C-17 flight carrying 392 passengers reached New Delhi.

India on Thursday deployed the third naval ship for the rescue operation, INS Tarkash.

When the fighting broke out between rival factions, there were over 3,000 Indian nationals living in Sudan, besides around 1,000 Persons of Indian Origin.
