Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised serious concerns over the prevailing atmosphere of fear, questioning the J&K government’s ability to ensure basic dignity and security for its people.

In the latest edition of its “Speak Up” newsletter, the party emphasized that before any talk of development, Kashmiris must first be guaranteed the fundamental right to live without fear.

Citing the two recent incidents of Kathua and Baramulla, the PDP said Chief Minister Omar Abdullah responded with the usual tweets condemning the incidents.

“In both cases, journalists and opposition leaders were barred from speaking to the bereaved families, their voices silenced just as swiftly as the victims’,” the PDP said. “The Chief Minister responded with the usual tweets condemning the incidents, while the government conveniently distanced itself from responsibility, claiming that “security” matters were beyond its control.”

The PDP said it is almost as if the National Conference has forgotten that it is, in fact, their government in power.

“If accountability were a priority, heads should have rolled immediately. A year ago, such impunity might not have been surprising under the rule of unelected administrators. With nearly 50 seats in the Assembly, what exactly is the NC-led government doing if not defending its people? If “nothing is in their hands,” then what, if anything, is?” the PDP asked.

The newsletter said these are not isolated incidents.

“Just weeks ago, when an ex-Army serviceman was killed, hundreds of men were rounded up in sweeping nocturnal raids across Kashmir. Many of them were distant relatives of militants who have long been dead. This is not law enforcement; this is collective punishment inflicted on ordinary, law-abiding citizens. And yet, the government remains silent, offering the same tired justifications. Whether it’s Independence Day or a VVIP visit, any excuse suffices to round up Kashmiri men, disappear them into interrogation cells, and subject them to torture,” the newsletter said.

The PDP said when Kashmiris turned out in overwhelming numbers to vote for NC, they were not merely choosing a party; they were placing their faith in a government that would protect them.

“Development was happening even under Governor’s rule-roads were being built, and foundation stones were being laid. But before development, Kashmiris sought a far more fundamental right: the right to live without fear. The question remains: If those in power cannot even ensure the basic dignity and safety of their people, then what exactly are they governing?,” the PDP said
