PM Modi, Brazilian President Lula da Silva discuss deepening bilateral ties, defence production

New Delhi/Hiroshima: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday held productive bilateral talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on the sidelines of the G7 in Hiroshima, during which the two discussed deepening the Strategic Partnership, including in defence production and trade.

This was the first meeting between the two leaders.

In a tweet, PM Modi said the two countries will keep working together to deepen their trade ties.

“The talks with President @LulaOficial were productive and wide ranging. India and Brazil will keep working together to deepen trade ties. We also discussed diversifying cooperation in sectors like agriculture, defence and more.”

The MEA spokesperson in a tweet said the two leaders also exchanged views on regional developments and on cooperation in multilateral platforms.

“Discussed ways to further deepen the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership, especially in sectors of defence production, trade, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, dairy & animal husbandry and renewable energy.

“Also exchanged views on regional developments and cooperation in multilateral platforms.”

The Brazilian President in a tweet said that during his first term Brazil had established a strategic partnership with India. He said the two leaders also discussed the need to find a way out of the Ukraine conflict.

“During my first term, we established a strategic partnership with India, which together with the Prime Minister @narendramodi we will work to resume.

“Brazil and India are countries with great contributions to the global economy and politics. Today we are also talking about the war in Ukraine and the need to build ways out of the conflict. We are on the side of peace.”

A statement said that during the talks, the leaders noted that this year marks the 75th anniversary year of establishment of diplomatic relations.

“They reviewed their Strategic Partnership, and discussed ways to further deepen it, especially in sectors of defence production, trade, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, dairy & animal husbandry and bio-fuels & clean energy. Both leaders emphasized the need to organize a high-level meeting of business leaders from both countries.

“The leaders exchanged views on regional developments. They emphasized the importance of continued cooperation in multilateral platforms, and the long-standing need of reform of multilateral institutions.

“Prime Minister Modi said he looks forward to welcoming President Lula in India for the G-20 Summit in September this year.”
