Qatar ready to help US establish dialogue with Iran: Foreign Ministry

Doha: Qatar is ready to become a mediator between the United States and Iran to resolve differences between the two countries over the Iranian nuclear program, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman and adviser to the Qatari prime minister Majed Al-Ansari said.

“And we had been even during the first Trump administration working with the administration over getting an arrangement with Iran, and we think it’s a role that we can play now,” Al-Ansari told the Fox News broadcaster on Wednesday.

At the same time, he noted that Qatar is currently participating in 10 mediation processes that are ongoing simultaneously, including mediation efforts between Palestinian movement Hamas and Israel.

In 2024, Qatar mediated a prisoner exchange between Iran and the US.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA, also known as the Iran nuclear deal), was signed in 2015 among Iran, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, China, Russia and the United States, as well as the European Union.

The deal provided for the easing of sanctions in exchange for curbs on Iran’s nuclear program. The US withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018 and reimposed sanctions on Tehran, which announced a gradual reduction of its commitments on nuclear research and uranium enrichment.
