While reading novels themed on history is not everyone’s cup of tea, a unique blend of mystery and history brings, for readers, a new and exciting reading experience. This is the versatility which has been brought about by ‘Shadows and Secrets- The Pataliputra Conspiracy’, author Harini Srinivasan’s new release.

Harini Srinivasan, a former civil servant turned author, has crafted a literary repertoire that spans historical detective fiction, romantic comedy, children’s books, and more. As an editor and content management professional, Harini’s influence extends beyond her own creations to shaping prominent publications. Her multitasking abilities, balancing day and night roles, exemplify dedication and passion for the literary craft.

Based in Gurgaon, India, Harini’s versatility makes her a force in the literary world.

In order to delve deeper into the enthralling genre of historical fiction, and to know more about Harini’s new release, Sonakshi Datta of GoaChronicle posed a few questions to the author.

‘Shadows and Secrets’ a gripping historical detective fiction with twists and turns: Harini Srinivasan -

How has your journey from being a civil servant to turning into an author been?

It has been an enriching journey so far, for which I am extremely grateful. While I had always dreamt of writing books, this transition – if you could call it that – has been unplanned. I have been lucky to have had my books published. Writing is a passion, one that I get to indulge, while having a full-time job in the private sector.

What all genres do you write in? Which one do you enjoy writing the most, and why?

I write historical fiction and romantic comedies. Historical fiction is my favorite genre – both as a reader and as a writer. As someone who has enjoyed both history and literature, historical fiction is a perfect combination of both.

‘Historical detective fiction’ is a less heard-of genre of novels, what made you venture into the world of this genre?

Historical detective fiction is a subsect of the historical fiction genre and it is basically a mystery with a historical setting. It is very popular in the west. Years ago, when I was part of a Facebook writing group, the discussion veered to the exclusivity and nicheness of the genre and how it has not been fully explored in the Indian context. We decided to pick one era and write a story set in it. That is how my first historical mystery, The Curse of Anuganga, came about.

Tell our readers something about ‘The Last Ones’.

The Last Ones was an interesting experiment by Harper Collins during the Covid lockdown. It was a crowdsourced story, built chapter by chapter by writers across the world. Chitra Banerjee kicked off the story with the first Chapter, followed by several known writers. Chapter 9 of the story was written by me.

What makes your latest release, ‘Shadows and Secrets: The Pataliputra Conspiracy’, a ‘must-read’?

It has a gripping plot, with many twists and turns, and also an international angle. While the research that has gone into it has been immense, I can assure you that it does not read like a history text book but is an interesting story. Do get a copy and read it!
