Sikkim celebrates 77th Independence Day with CM hoisting Tri-colour

Gangtok: Chief Minister PS Tamang hoisted the National Flag, as Sikkim joined the rest of the nation in celebrating the 77th Independence Day on Tuesday.

The state’s main function was held at the Paljour stadium, where the chief guest Tamang was given a guard of honour. The CM gave away awards for meritorious service to the civil servants for their remarkable contribution.

Tamang’s address mainly focussed on the progress made by his government during the past five years.

‘This day symbolises the remarkable journey of our nation towards independence and reminds us of the sacrifices made for the freedom and progress we enjoy today,” he said, paying his respects to the freedom fighters, whose unwavering courage paved the way for the nation’s independence.

Turning to the state, Tamang said his government places importance on delivering high-quality and all-encompassing education to empower the children in tackling the ever-changing demands of the modern world.

“Our commitment to this cause is evident through various projects, successful implementation of schemes, and the introduction of unique policies, all aimed at fostering holistic development among our students,” he said.

He said the government considers enhancing public safety, combating crime effectively, improving response times, and strengthening community policing as vital components of good governance.

‘’I am delightful to share the news that Sikkim has been selected as part of Government of India’s pilot Vibrant Village programme, the visionary initiative conceived by PM Narendra Modi, for comprehensive development,’ he said.

He said Sikkim whoheartedly embraces the programme of Har Ghar Tiranga (Tri-colour at every home) “and is committed to actively participating, ensuring that the sacrifices of our brave martyrs are honoured with utmost glory and reverence”.

He said over the years, Sikkim has witnessed remarkable growth and development in various fields.

“Our state has become a shining example of sustainable development, preserving our unique environment while embracing economic progress. We have also achieved significant milestones in sectors such as health, education, organic farming, environment protection and tourism,” he said.

As per data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Sikkim’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) has shown a remarkable growth of 28.56 per cent during 2022-23 fiscal in comparison to the fiscal year 2019-20.
