Hyderabad: Aiming to achieve at least 300 sq. Kms of cool roof area by the year 2028, Telangana government launched India’s largest Cool roof policy 2023-28 in the state on Monday.

Addressing press persons after launching the policy here, Minister for IT and Industries K.Rama Rao Rao (KTR) said this policy envisages to make Telangana a thermally comfortable and a heat resilient State.

The policy is expected to result in cooler homes, since cool roofs can help keep indoor temperatures 2 to 4 degree Celsius lower than households with traditional roofs, he said it will also lower costs since cool roofs need limited maintenance and can save 20 per cent in energy costs.

In the first year 2023-24, we target to adopt 7.5 sq kms including five sq kms in GHMC limits, the Minister said that cool roofing would be made mandatory for residential plots of more than 600 sq yards besides incorporating the cool roofing provision under TSBPASS.

The policy suggests adoption cool roof as a measure for implementation to build resilience against extreme heat, improve thermal comfort and move the state of Telangana towards reducing urban heat islands in its cities, the Minister added.
