Agartala: Tripura celebrated the 51st Victory Day of Bangladesh on Friday with colourful programmes and different events to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of those who participated in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War to liberate East Pakistan from the clutches of the Pakistani army.
The Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh in Agartala organized a seminar and friendship interaction on the contribution of Tripura in the creation of Bangladesh and multiple initiatives undertaken by both countries to further strengthen the bilateral relation at their campus with the intellectuals of the state.
The Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly Ratan Chakraborty attended the celebration of Bangladesh Assistant High Commission and rewind his memories during the 1971 war and the role of the then Indian government, common people, and Indian army.
Despite logistic difficulties, Tripura had sheltered Bangladeshi more than its population. Several Indian soldiers sacrificed their lives and a decisive offensive launched by the Indian Armed Forces 51 years ago culminated with the surrender of 93,000 Pakistani troops at Dhaka, which gave birth to sovereign Bangladesh, Chakraborty said.
To commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of those who participated in the 1971 War, a major comprehensive event was held at Albert Ekka War Memorial.
The day will commence with a Wreath Laying Ceremony at War Memorial in the morning paying homage to the brave hearts who made the supreme sacrifice for the nation.
A cultural event is scheduled in the evening at the Amphitheatre of the War Memorial to be hosted by Red Shield Artillery Brigade along with the Tripura Government and the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh in Agartala.
CM Saha Information and Cultural Affairs minister Sushant Chowdhary, and Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Agartala Minister Arif Mohammad besides, Indian Army, Assam Rifles, BSF, CRPF, and war veterans of the 1971 war are likely to attend.
Paying tribute to the supreme sacrifice of Liberation War fighters, Information Minister Chowdhury pointed out that the Narendra Modi-led government at the centre has been working on a multifarious development programme for improving bilateral trade, commerce, human resource, tourism, and cultural development through Tripura.
The bridge over River Feni has already become operational to connect the Chittagong seaport by road from South Tripura.
The track laying work on Agartala – Akhura railways have been going on a priority basis while SEZ in Sabroom is all set to be functional to attract foreign investment taking the advantage of seaport access in Bangladesh, Chowdhury added.
