Washington: Former US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that, if he is elected in 2024 to serve a second term as US president, his commitment to NATO would depend on whether the alliance treats the United States properly.

“Depends if they treat us properly,” Trump said during a town hall event in Iowa.

NATO has taken advantage of the United States, Trump added.

Trump has always been skeptical over the amount of defense spending NATO countries contribute to the alliance while the United States takes on much of the responsibility.

Trump, during his first term as US president, was able to get several NATO countries to increase their defense spending.
