United Nations: The United Nations will hold an open debate on peacekeeping operations next week, Slovenian Ambassador to the world body Samuel Zbogar said on Tuesday.

“The first open debate on UN peacekeeping operations on September 9 will be focused on the importance of the Security Council’s unified political support for the peace operations,” Zbogar, who presides over the UN Security Council during the month of September, said.

Zbogar pointed out that the debate will allow the international community to discuss ways to improve support for peacekeeping operations.

“This will be a chance to reflect also on the future of UN peacekeeping given everything that has been happening to UN peacekeeping operations in the past years,” Zbogar said.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had called earlier for holding a discussion on the future prospects of peacekeeping.
