Bengaluru: Former Karnataka minister and Congress legislator UT Khader is all set to become the youngest Karnataka Speaker after he filed the nomination for the coveted post at Vidhana Soudha here on Tuesday.

He filed the nomination in CM Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar’s presence.

Khader has served as urban development minister in the past, and health minister in Siddaramaiah cabinet, from May 2013 to May 2016.

In this year’s assembly election, Khader defeated BJP’s Satish Kumpala by 22,000 votes in Mangaluru constituency in Dakshina Kannada district. In the 2018 election, he was the only Congress legislator from the district.

Khader will take over from Congress MLA RV Deshpande, who was chosen as pro-tem Speaker for the assembly session that began on May 22.

In a surprising move yesterday, the Congress leaders, who do not miss an opportunity to make anti-Hindu statements at the drop of their hats, their party workers sprinkled cow urine and performed puja at the state assembly, saying that they are purifying Vidhana Soudha.
