Chennai: The Chennai city has recorded the third highest rainfall in 72 years on November one. Talking to reporters here today, Regional Meterological Centre Director S.Balachandran said the Nungambakkam observatory in the city recorded eight cm of rains during
the last 24 hrs ending at 0830 hrs today.

This is the third highest rainfall recorded in the city in 72 years for November one.

He said on this day, the highest rainfall recorded in the city was 13 cms in 1990 and the previous highest was 11 cms in 1964.

Today’s rainfall was the highest recorded this day in nearly three decades. As the day progressed, the rainfall level is likely to increase further as the rains are pouring non-stop.

Balachandran said Chennai city and other districts like Tiruvlalur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Vellore and Ranipet will receive heavy rains for the next two days
due to downward atmospheric circulation prevailing over the northern coast of Sri Lanka and the southern coast of Tamil Nadu.

Fishermen were advised not to venture into the sea as squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph is likely to prevail over Tamilnadu coast, Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal for the next two days.
