The workers of Apple’s largest Iphone-making plant situated in China have revolted, and they are disgruntled because of the terror being spread under the garb of strict COVID-19 restrictions, and they have not been paid their wages. The distressed workers of this Foxconn Technology Group plant got involved in physical skirmishes with the security guards and the Chinese police, following which a lot many people got injured.

The workers have stated that in the name of controlling the spread of COVID-19, they have not been allowed to leave the plant for the last 1.5 months, and because of the lockdown, the workers were rendered isolated and did not receive proper food. Their anger shot up because they were not paid their wages on time, opposite to what was promised. The workers further alleged that Foxconn had promised them to increase their wages and improve their working conditions, but nothing was done.

The anger is not limited to the Apple plant only. In Zhengzhou, which is called the ‘Iphone city’, more than 2 lakh workers are in a lockdown-like isolation, and there are no facilities for their medical treatment. As a result, many of the workers had escaped from the site. Zhengzhou is a crucial Apple manufacturing centre. Along with 4 out of 5 of its latest handsets, its Iphone 14 pro units are also manufactured here. Apple’s over-dependence on China can prove to be detrimental for the company.
