Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) began an internal probe into the “mysterious” death of Lalan Sheikh, one of the prime accused in the Bogtui massacre of West Bengal’s Birbhum district in last March, official sources confirmed on Tuesday.

Lalan Sheikh, who was arrested recently from a hideout, nearly eight months after the notorious carnage, was allegedly found hanging inside the washroom of a makeshift camp at Rampurhat where he was kept under the CBI custody.

Lalan, one of the prime accused in the case to alleged bomb attack that killed Trinamool Congress leader Bhadu Sheikh near the Bogtui vilage on March 22 last, was found dead in the CBI’s makeshift custody at Rampurhat in Birbhum district on Monday, sources added.

They said the CBI camp office at Rampurhat already dispatched a report of Lalan Sheikh’s death to its Delhi office following an order from the federal agency’s headquarters, the special crime branch of the agency also began an internal enquiry into the death.

However, there was no official briefing from the CBI regarding the death of Lalan Sheikh.
After the murder of Badhu Sheikh around 8 20 pm on March 21, a retaliatory attack was
orchestrated hours later in which 8 people, six of them were women, were burnt alive after
the miscreants set on fire some houses after being locked from outside of the victims.

Two more women succumbed in the local hospital due to burns. Bhadu Sheikh was the deputy chief of the Trinamool Congress controlled Barshal gram panchayat.
