Sultanpur (UP): Rail traffic on Lucknow-Prayagraj route was disrupted when two goods trains collided head on in which drivers of both the trains were injured and 10 coaches derailed near Sultanpur railway station here in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, official sources said here.

Sources said that two freight trains collided under Garbhariya overbridge in the morning. “Loco pilots of both the trains were seriously injured in the accident and 10 coaches derailed. Railway track was also damaged in the accident,” they said.

Sources said that the Northern Railway has diverted all the trains passing through Sultanpur via Faizabad and Pratapgarh. Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) CP Pathak, who reached the accident site, said that the technical team of the railway department has left from Lucknow to clear the rail route.

He expressed hope that the rail traffic will be restored by late evening. He said that an inquiry will be conducted to probe the cause of the accident.

Station Master SS Meena said that prima facie the accident occurred due to the negligence of the driver of the goods train coming from Varanasi. He said that the driver was signaled to stop at the home signal, but the cause of the accident would be clear only after investigation.
